I am really excited to submit this yay for me! because I have been running in minimalist shoes (mostly the invisible shoes, now xero) for a couple years, but finally got the courage to go completely barefoot or “raw dog” as my cousin called it (although i thought this referred to something else, lol ) in my first race. I have been running barefoot for the last couple of months and was up to 4 miles on the trails around my home.
On August 12th my Team Mud, Sweat and Beers and I were signed up for the Mudathlon 2012 outside of Cincinnati, OH; this race is 3 miles and 40 obstacles. This was our second year and I knew what the course was like, lots of mud, some rocks, creek crossings and the obstacles and I decided that I could handle it barefoot.
It was awesome! The mud squishing between my toes and no heavy shoes to bog me down! Four of our teammates separated and were behind us and saw my foot print in one of the mud obstacles, which i thought was pretty cool. Several people thought I had lost one or both of my shoes somewhere along the course, but I assured them I started out barefoot.
My teammates made ouch sounds for me when I ran over the several sections of rocks, but actually it didn’t bother me at all. I only had one negative comment when I caught my toe ring on a hay bale and some girl said, “are you really going to try to save your toe ring,” in a very snotty tone of voice, but I replied that of course I was! I think it took us 1 and 1/2 hrs, but it was all the way and I would definitely do it again barefoot!
Thanks for letting us share our accomplishments with you!
